Description

This is a quick coloring I did to a sketch that I drew, literally, about 3 hours before hand. I see everyone else likes to torture Teemo in their pictures, well, I have Nocturne coming in for a finishing blow on him. Enjoy!

First off, the coloring job gives this piece a very Scratchboard feel to the art in general, as if carved from a black background. This kind of feel suits the character portrayed quite well, as Nocturne's ultimate is a strike from the shadows, anywhere in his range and benefits from negative or dark spaces in the drawing. The negative space created by the dark background adds to the effect, and embellishes the terror aspect of his strike.

The lighting effects fit the character and theme quite well, and the flowing, almost flame like quality surrounding him is a unique and interesting approach for the piece. It matches his glowing eyes and creates a "light up" effect common in many depictions of horror, where the protagonist (Teemo, in this case) is suddenly confronted by the striking silhouette of his attacker. It becomes a light in the darkness, one that Teemo, or anyone, would never wish to see.

As for the first person subject, the hands do add to the composition somewhat, and help fill up the negative space left over in the bottom right, but it seems almost comical, compared to the well done surprise/horror feel that the nocturne drawing gives off by itself. Not having the full view or headshot closeup of the character helps put the viewer "in his place", but the two hands detract from the effect somewhat. The left arm appears to be at an angle due to the slight bend below the glove, while the right implies that the viewer (Teemo) is directly in front of the frame. This ends up creating an odd juxtaposition that takes the viewing away from the initial feeling of surprise. The gloves themselves do not immediately evoke the image of Teemo, which allows a comical interpretation of the image as someone fending off Nocturne with oven mitts.

Putting the mugshot of the viewer (Teemo) in the picture itself with a single hand warding off the strike might work as well, but could potentially fall prey to the comical feel mentioned. Adding something to the gloves or in the hands that could help represent Teemo more clearly could also work, but again the task is to maintain the surprise/horror feel while still presenting a character as the viewer of the piece in question.

Overall, the artwork is excellent and the effects previously mentioned stand out quite well. The coloring and shading of the piece suits the theme in a coherent way and brings out the life of the artwork. Anything else that could be done to correct is merely the 'cherry on top' of a great work of art.
